Corners and inescapable places

About

The young ones, all fresh and fecund were enthusiastic to leave. With crisp fingerling roots, they set out, feeling their way between the concrete walls.

It had been easy going at first, and they sent new leaves into the light.

But as summer wore on and the sun bore down, their green leaves bleached to white and they went hungry. Some retreated, some withered, some died.

The remainder burrowed onwards, youth and optimism clinging to the blind belief that the grass is always greener on the other side.
