The visitor

Corners and inescapable places

The visitor arrived unbidden and wanting blood.

It breached their veiled sanctuary, so they countered with wild swatting and readied their open palms for the death slap.

Later, with lights on, they embarked on a systematic search. Defying them, and folded into invisibility by the gauzy shroud, the visitor waited.

Then, with wings flapping at 1000 beats per second, the visitor launched multiple offensives, its squeal only ceasing when proboscis entered warm flesh.

In the morning—welted and weary—they wondered how protection had somehow become prison.
